Royal Canadian Army Service Corps

WW ll

On the 25th of December 1919, in Morden, Manitoba, Walter Lewis was born to William and Emma (Boulton) Sandercock. Walter was the fifth of 9 children, Edger (who enlisted with the RCASC in February 1942), Mel, Bert, Marion (Patterson), Doug, Velma (Keith), Garry and Mavis. They grew up in the Dunston area north west of Morden, in the Rural Municipality (RM) of Stanley.

Walter went to Ontario, sometime after his war service for work and met Florence Evelyn Legeer, born in Owen Sound in 1922. They were married in 1948 and one year later started their family. They had 6 children Barry Raymond 1949, Brian Wallace 1951, Bruce Edward 1953, Robert James 1955, Michael Glen 1958 and finally a girl, Shirley Lynne 1960.

Walter worked at Cyanamid as a carpenter then joined Toastmaster, where he delivered bread throughout the Niagara Peninsula, for the next 12 years. In 1960 he started working at Lubrizol, a chemical plant in Niagara and stayed there for the next 25 years, until retirement in 1985.

Walter was an avid curler and also enjoyed golf and baseball. He enjoyed coaching the boys in sports and as a leader in a scout troop. Walter’s farm upbringing showed in his green thumb and love for gardening. He loved traveling and often took Florence and the children home to Morden to visit family. He was very involved in the Stamford United Church in Niagara and was content to remain behind the scenes, doing what needed doing, without praise or guidance. If you needed something done, “ask Wally”, he was always available. Walter had many close friends from his work and church involvement. He took pride in his family and was very involved in their lives and the lives of the grandchildren. Walter suffered health issues and unfortunately his life was cut short, there was so much more he wanted to do. He left behind a lifetime of memories and an example of love and respect to family and friends.

Lance Sergeant Walter Lewis Sandercock died 21 November 1987 at 67 years. He is buried in the Pleasantview Cemetery, Fonthill, Ontario.
